IE professor Martin Boehm

IE’s own Professor Martin Boehm was quoted in a recent article published in Gulf News that focused on the rapid growth of new business degrees apart from the MBA, while highlighting the Master in Management degree. Faculty interviewed in the article point out that business schools are creating these programs in order to impart business skills for a variety of professionals with different needs and at different stages in their careers.

As Prof. Boehm stated, in recent years European business school have tended to focus on three levels of business education, with the EMBA for very experienced professionals with over 15 years of experience, the MBA for experienced professionals, and the MIM for students with 0-3 years of experience looking to get a head-start on their professional goals. Although a significant majority of schools offering top-ranked MIM programs are in Europe, business schools in North America, including Duke´s Fuqua School of Business in North Carolina, and Asia and the Middle East, including the SP Jain Center of Management, which has campuses in Singapore and Dubai, are both offering a degree for young professionals and pre-experienced students. Experts agree that the Master in Management degree is not a substitute for an MBA, nor should it be seen as a “junior” MBA; but rather, it is a degree that imparts fundamental business and management skills rather than focus on delivering a general business education to fill in any gaps.

Segovia Campus

The Master in International Management Open Ceremony took place today on IE’s campus in Segovia (pictured left). Students were greeted with a breakfast before listening to some talks from David Bach, Dean of Programs, Martin Boehm, Associate Dean of Master in Management Program, Margarita Alonso, General Director Alumni & Careers and Lisa Bevill, Director of Admissions for Full-Time programs.

The ceremony’s key note speaker was Gonzalo Castellano, a recent IE International MBA Graduate and one of the founders of City Deal, which was acquired by Groupon, called the fasted-growing company in history by Forbes Magazine. Gonzalo shared his experience as an IE student and spoke about the thrills and challenges of founding a start-up company in Madrid during the economic crisis. He expounded on the resources made available to him through fellow classmates, former professors and the career and alumni offices at IE. The new Master in International Management students had the opportunity to jump into the business fray in the first hours of their program by participating in a question and answer session with Gonzalo and interacting with him over lunch. Students were then treated to a walking tour of Segovia’s historic district before heading back to Madrid.

A big welcome to our class from 48 different countries. The year promises to be one of huge challenges, but also huge rewards. Good luck!
