MIM Alumni share their job hunting experiences and their tips

Written on February 2, 2012 by MIM Blog in News

In this market, is it going to be possible to find a job? Any job?

MIM students were naturally worried about their job prospects in today’s global financial crisis: reading the newspaper brought new daily woes. With limited contact with graduates of the program, they were eager to find out where they were working today. To showcase the successes of recent MIM alumni, Program Management invited current students to come and learn from graduates who had been standing in their shoes not so long ago.

Three MIM alumni visited their alma mater on January 31, 2012 to share their experiences job hunting: Rosa Sanchis (2010), currently a Senior Analyst at Ferrovial; Pablo Piquero (2010), an Analyst at Accenture; and Xulei Xu (2011), Analyst at Ernst & Young. The three alumni charmed the audience with their poise and optimism for MIM students in even today´s most dismal job market. Rosa encouraged the students to interview as much as possible, to learn from different interviewing styles and gain confidence. Pablo suggested that students spend significant time with their resume to ensure it highlights their best qualities and experiences. Xulei encouraged students with little work experience to participate in Business Competitions and study trips abroad in order to have something to talk about with recruiters. Having started as an intern at E&Y, he offered a permanent contract after six months, and he pointed out to potential interns that they should treat every day of their internship as a part of the selection process. All three encouraged students to persevere, to start networking early on, and to try as many different avenues for the job search as possible.

The event was moderated by two current MIM students, Pablo Galarraga, who hails from Navarra, Spain, and María Isabel Bermúdez, from Caracas, Venezuela. Our moderators deftly ran through a series of questions, including, “When do you suggest beginning your job search?” (Unanimous answer: As soon as possible!) “How did you find your job?” (Answers: From the Careers website; from a classmate) and “What social media tools did you use?” (Unanimous answer: LinkedIn).

A huge thank you to our alumni and our students for participating in this event!
