Remembering spring break

Written on September 20, 2011 by MIM Blog in News

Hanna TantocoI do not have a concept of Spring break. First I studied in the Philippines, where we only have one season- tropical and second, I do not think I deserve the spring break. Not. April 16-25, 2011 maybe the best days of any February 2011 MIM student. Ever since classes started last February 1, there was nothing better to talk about (apart from the exciting cases!) but Spring break plans, a third of the class came from Europe, that is why it is not surprising that they will go back home. A big chunk, although not from Europe still decided to take advantage of the break to fly back home and yet others travelled to nearby countries from Spain, while a few including myself decided to stay here in Spain. The first day, started with Segovia. The express train from Chamartin station brings you to the old city of Segovia, in 40 minutes. Then you take a short bus ride to the center, where the breath-taking UNESCO world heritage site will welcome you. I spent the day walking around the city, checking out cathedrals, museums and castles (yes, castles) and ended the day with a late lunch of cochinillo. Me and my friends took the express train again back to Madrid, with feet and legs aching and limping. Sunday for me started late, I went to La Latina for a taste of Madrid flea market, had lunch at Sta. Ana, sun-tanned at Retiro and headed to Plaza Ventas Torros for a my first ever bullfight. I left the stadium, with mixed feelings and still a greater appreciation of the Spanish culture. To cap it off, we had dinner at a quaint restaurant in Sol called Malaspina where I had croquetas and Pollo con patatas fritas. Monday was reserved for a photo shoot in Palacio Real and unwinding at Mercado San Miguel. Tuesday we went to Museo El Prado (free entrance everyday from 6 to 8pm) and closed the night with a Flamenco show at Tablao Flamenco near Plaza Mayor. Wednesday, me and one classmate watched Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo, the Strategic Management class where we discussed about blue ocean strategies actually gave me the idea and it is good that they were in town! Thursday and Friday were spent visiting historic churches here in Madrid. All in all, I had sweet spring break. But back to hitting the books!

One last project: the final exam

Written on July 18, 2011 by MIM Blog in News

Bernardo Daza, current student of the Master in International Management class of 2010 tells us about the last phase of the program: The Final Exam.

We are approaching our final weeks of our specialization period and every student in the Master in International Management will have to make one last effort in order to become successful in completing the program. All students are required to do a final exam presentation in front of a judge panel, this project is very similar to preparing a report for a management team in a real situation. During the presentation students have to use their business expertise and learnt tools during the program to convince the panel that their strategy is viable. It is very important to be innovative and persuasive when presenting their ideas referring to a given business case concerning the specialization chosen at the beginning of the program (International Business, Sales & Marketing and Digital Business).

It will be our last challenge in a long journey, everyone is excited and a little nervous at the same time. It is time to suit-up and demonstrate our skills and everything we have learnt in the past year. As usual the Master in International Management students will overcome the difficulties and will achieve success. The Master in International Management degree has been earned and all the effort put this last year pays back.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT CLASS OF 2010-2011 !!!!!

LBS EXCHANGE PROGRAM – ANOTHER STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

Written on May 31, 2011 by MIM Blog in News

Hubertus Halmburguer, current student of the Master in International Management class of 2010, shares his experience during the LBS Exchange Program:

“The academic theme of the “Global Markets & Entrepreneurship” was supported by company visits to some of the leading companies in their industries in London and Madrid.

Further, the exchange with LBS allowed us to collaborate with one of the most prestigious business schools in the world and its well-rounded students. The “multicultural differences” showed me that Master in International Management students at IE Business School have a settled team approach, very familiar with one another, which reflects IE culture in an excellent way.

Because both groups consisted of a wide range of students with different origins and backgrounds, the time was outstanding in terms of exchanging experience, planning future projects and enjoying both locations.

In general I can say that the exchange provided all participants the possibility, to get the best out of it. A glamorous chance for students of both business schools to network, find friends for life, and business partners for the future.”

During the specialization phase of the Master in International Management program, students are offered the opportunity to embark on the Global Immersion Week, an optional week long trip to places* such as Singapore, San Francisco, or London to gain greater international awareness and experiences, providing several opportunities for students to learn more about doing business on a global scale.

* Locations might vary from intake to intake depending on demand of students and availability of slots.

LBS Exchange Program – Global Immersion Week

Written on May 27, 2011 by MIM Blog in News

Bernardo Daza, current student of the Master in International Management class of 2010 describes his experience during the LBS Exchange Program part of the Global Immersion Week:

Over the past two weeks, IE Business School and LBS students from the Master in International Management have engaged in an exchange program in Madrid and London respectively.

The exchange program in Madrid focused on entrepreneurship. IE is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit, having been founded by entrepreneurs in 1973. Our peers from LBS had some very interesting seminars on the topic with well known professors and promising start-ups such as IE Alumni companies like Busuu and Groupon in order to get a feel for the entrepreneurial character. They also had the chance to enjoy the beauty of Madrid and even experience some Flamenco.

A couple of days after hosting LBS, it was the turn for IE MIM students to take over London and live a new experience. The central topic of the exchange was Global Markets, which made a lot of sense since London is one of the largest financial capitals in the world. We had the opportunity to be part of some great seminars on Private Equity and Global Economy. The most exciting aspect was to listen in on meetings and visit large financial companies such as Thompson Reuters and Morning Star. We even got the chance to see ‘traders’ in action at the London Metal Exchange; a total rush of adrenaline. We also took part in some London pastimes such as relaxing in a traditional English Pub and enjoying the beautiful view on the River Thames.

The best part of the experience was to meet and to network with many young professional and to share our insights on careers, expertise and life. This is something that none of the participants will forget and from now on we will continue to develop the bond made between Madrid and London.

So, what do you get when you join students from 2 of the top Business Schools of the world? I will let the pictures talk for themselves since, as you know, an image is worth a thousand words.

International Business Specialization

Written on May 17, 2011 by MIM Blog in News

An exciting aspect of IE Business School’s Master in International Management is the opportunity to study one of three specializations. One of these specializations is International Business, which prepares future managers to live and succeed in a world of permanent evolution and change.

The phenomenon of globalization and the resulting worldwide expansion of companies requires specialized professionals that are able to understand the different environments in which multinational companies develop and perform. The International Business specialization provides the students with key elements and tools in order to adjust and perform in these different environments with success and analytical thinking. In this specialization you take a global perspective in several areas of business management such as Finance, Marketing, Operations & Supply Chain, Human Resources and Entrepreneurship,

Something that gives special value for this specialization is the global and diverse contribution of the different students in the class. There is no better added value than learning from self experience and from other professionals’ experience. Indeed, 82% of our students in the Master in International Management are from international backgrounds and each student can speak 3 languages on average.
