Last month I had the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa as part of the MIM Global Immersion Week. During the span of the trip, I found myself thrilled and challenged by its vibrant culture. I encountered a range of breathtaking sights, delicious cuisine, and skilled professionals focused on bringing social innovation to emerging markets.

One of the highlights of this experience was learning about South African history and culture. Led by local guides, we visited a range of important sights, including the Apartheid Museum and Nelson Mandela’s house. We also walked through a range of diverse areas, including Soweto and Diepsloot.

Throughout the week, we received consulting training from the Emzingo Group and their partners, with an emphasis on driving social impact through business. Afterwards, we were able to apply those skills and the knowledge we’ve gained in the MIM program  to critical challenges facing South African society. We worked closely with entrepreneurs and witnessed firsthand their dedication to improving the quality of life for people in disadvantaged communities.

We also had the opportunity to travel outside the city and see some amazing African wildlife. Our group went on a safari tour and then visited the famous Lion Park reserve, where we found ourselves face-to-face with lions and cheetahs!

Overall, the Global Immersion Week in South Africa was a powerful experience that shaped the way I view the region and business in emerging markets. I recommend that all interested students apply for this incredible trip!
